Address sexual shame

Shame, a painful emotion rooted in feelings of inadequacy and unworthiness, can cast a long shadow over our sexual lives if it gets entangled in sexuality. It not only is deeply uncomfortable, impacting the sense of self, but can have a negative influence on intimate relationships.

Sexual shame comes from a number of places, including early negative experiences. There are some common indicators that indicate it is present, here are a few:

  1. You feel sexually shut down, inhibited or avoidant in intimate  relationships.
  2. You feel sexually dissatisfied, not in touch with the sexual energy that contributes to arousal, excitement and orgasm.
  3. You consistently over-focus on your partner’s satisfaction in lieu of your own.
  4. You avoid being naked, preferring lights out during sex or generally try to cover yourself.

Overcoming sexual shame is a journey that requires self-compassion and sometimes family of origin work to help untangle the roots. Deeply held belief systems about self and sexuality probably can benefit from a closer look. I help people identify, understand and work through this issue, that often hides in the shadows, and can be uncomfortable to discuss with even friends.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with Lisa Kift for many years, both in previous clinics and with mutual clients. Lisa is a deeply knowledgeable and skilled therapist who brings insight, empathy, and clarity to her work. She has a strong focus on family-of-origin dynamics and how early experiences shape current relational and emotional patterns. Lisa is an active and engaged clinician—she doesn’t just sit back, but thoughtfully guides her clients through the healing process. I highly recommend working with Lisa at Marin Therapy and Counseling. She is a trusted colleague and a true asset to the field.

I am a strong believer in therapy and have worked with many therapists for over 20 years but Lisa is by far the best. After working with Lisa for the past 5 years, she has been there for me through some of my highest highs and lowest lows. She helps me take a step back and think about situations or problems with a different lens. She has always supported a cadence that worked best for me, starting with once a week and winding down to once a month. I am so thankful to have found Lisa and would recommend her to anyone!
