Feel off? America is Emotionally Unwell

If you’re feeling off and generally not yourself, you’re not alone. Sure,  there are many reasons people have for being out of sorts. But there’s an added layer firmly putting pressure on our psyche’s and hearts.

My therapy practice has been steadily busy and though people aren’t coming in with their primary concern being the state of political affairs in the U.S., the topic is coming up more, as I’m noticing it in my life and community. You’re not making it up if you’re feeling unsettled, many are.

Three reasons:

  1. Existential Anxiety: The dismantling of federal institutions has removed the “predictability” humans need for emotional safety.
  2. Nervous System Hijacking: Constant high-stakes rhetoric and keeps citizens in a state of “fight-or-flight,” leading to physical fatigue and emotional burnout.
  3. Nervous System Regulation: Many can benefit from tools to help shift from “threat” to “rest” response.

If you’re noticing yourself preoccupied by the state of affairs in a way that is having a worrisome impact, there are some “somatic resets” you can do if you feel internally hijacked by the news or other discussions. The goal is to get your prefrontal cortex (the logical brain) back online.

  • Temperature: Splash ice-cold water on your face for 30 seconds. This triggers the “mammalian dive reflex,” which naturally slows the heart rate.
  • Paced Breathing: Inhale for a count of 4, hold for 2, and exhale for a count of 6. The extended exhale sends a direct message to the vagus nerve to stand down.

This was adapted from my fuller length piece, Unsettled: Why America is Emotionally Unwell on my other site, LoveAndLifeToolbox.com.

If you could use additional support or a space to process your feelings and look for strategies for more resilience, I teach people tools to manage high stress levels in many areas.
